It is common practice that on the internet persons will develop a course or training program that is intended to teach you how to make money from the latest trends, it could be how to become a forex trader, how to make money buying real estate, it could be how to sell products on eCommerce, or how to become a social media influencer.

As you can see all of these types of business opportunities can be legit, but unfortunately the snake oil salesman are going to sell you “the dream” of becoming a business owner, becoming your own boss, working for yourself, leaving the rat race, spending more time with your family and working at home in your pajamas.

Its best to learn a skill and then teach it to others to help them with growing a business or starting a new career. It will take time to reach the results that you want to achieve.

You may have heard the phrase that “if it sounds too good to be true than it probably is.” well that saying holds true on the internet. You will encounter what is known as “Snake oil salesman” while you surf the web.

The dictionary definition is: Snake oil is something which is sold or presented as a cure or a solution to a problem but which, in fact, has no use or value. You may be familiar with the many “make money online” programs available to the public that fill your email box and consistently show up in your Facebook feed.

The problem with Joining Business Opportunities

The truth of the matter is that you are going to waste money and time on educational video training courses, mentorship calls, bootcamps, membership sites, ebooks, marketing tools, software apps, done for you systems which will lead to frustration and information overload.

Being consistent is important because I know from experience that the internet can make promises that it can’t keep. All the fancy talking salesman, special shiny salespages, psychological emotional stories will have you confused and stuck not knowing what to do.

Once you realize that there is no “easy” answers that it takes “work” most people get discouraged and disillusioned with all the so called internet gurus who hold the keys to the kingdom.

There is only a few ways that you can take control of your life and make a change for the better.

First you must be clear on what you want to achieve. Do you want to quit your job? Do you want to start a business? Do you want to work from home? Do you want to earn more money?
Once you decide what you want, then you must write down what steps you will need to take to get there. Do you have to get a business loan? Will you have business partners? Do you want to run a company yourself or outsource it to specialists?
After you decide what you want and how you are going to get there. What are you willing to sacrifice to reach your goals? Will you need to learn a new skill?

You have two choices:

You can either work for someone else as a consultant, independent contractor, employee or freelancer
You can own a company where you sell a product or service and have employees.

Working from Home as a Contract Employee

Most people who make money online and work from home are employees for a company that allows telecommuting. You still receive a salary, being paid by contract or hourly.

These kinds of jobs require a skill or previous educational degrees such as working for a call center doing customer care answering phone calls, or data entry and transcription, computer programming, technical writing, website development or graphic design, teaching classes online. etc. You will need to have work experience and verifiable references.

Companies will hire remote workers and do virtual interviews. You will need to have access to the internet, headset, webcam, reliable computer software and hardware. With the ability to send and receive files, or collaborate with teams via Zoom or Google Meetings.

Working at home as a Freelancer or Consultant

If you have a background in sales, or business management you can hire yourself out to companies to provide consultation or provide training to leadership teams. As a client provider you set your own hours and can often set your own pay rate. These types of positions go to the most qualified person who can achieve results. It may require that you get recommended by clients who can use your services.

Working from home as a Business Owner

To start a business requires that you have a product or service that you can sell online to customers. You will need a website, domain name, autoresponder, blog content and a product that provides value to help others solve a problem or help them improve themselves.

You can sell physical products or you can sell virtual products. Such as becoming a book writer and self-publishing books on Amazon Kindle. Or you can set up a ecommerce store and find a dropshipping company to send customers items that they buy from your Shopify store.

The reality of being a business owner is that you will need to sacrifice your time and money. Depending on how much effort you want to put into growing your company it may be necessary to outsource tasks to a virtual assistant or office manager. It is important to have good team building and communication skills.

Working from home as an affiliate for brands

There is another type of self-employed activity and that is becoming an affiliate for big brands like Walmart, Bestbuy, Amazon, eBay, these are online stores that need help with getting customers, you get paid when you refer someone to the online store and they make a purchase. The brands will share revenue from each sale.

This is called referral marketing, companies will pay you if you are able to use social media to attract leads and referrals who become customers for big brands. You often see this on Youtube, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, they are called “influencers” because they are able to gain a following of subscribers who will buy from recommendations.

Although this can be a fun way to make money, it is highly competitive and requires lots of time uploading videos and reviewing products sent by companies that hope that by giving a positive review your followers will buy the product.

If you have been laid off your job and are looking for a second source of income, I would recommend that you do some research.

Find out which companies are hiring remote workers, look for which freelance websites need skilled jobseekers and just beware of ads that promise easy money.

You have probably heard that all it takes is for a person to visualize what they want and speak it into existence. This is pretty much the definition of the “law of attraction” whatever a person focuses their mind on will soon come to pass.

How can you help people find solutions to their problems? if you can answer that question then you will be well on your way to meeting your goals and manifesting your dreams.

Remember there is no magic pill, it will not come easy. It takes lots of hard work, planning and determination to not give up.

Once you put in the work then you can realize a dream that can grow bigger than you could ever imagine. But it must start from a place of humility, gratitude and self-serving of others.

Put in the work, stick to a plan of action and then receive the rewards. The internet has made it easier to reach a global audience.

My Opinion and Thoughts

If you are a small business and you have a product or service that you want to sell than it will take unwavering belief to stay the test of time during an economic crisis. People are looking for solutions and answers. You can build a lifestyle brand that will be something other people are seeking. That is why it is best to find something that you are good at doing.

Starting a business not for everyone. Some find success by freelancing their skills out to others. Maybe you don’t want to sell products or even setting up a website. If that is the case that is okay. You just need to have a plan, figure out what daily tasks you will need to do to gain the momentum you want to see.

The road will require that you keep reading and learning from mentors

If you build a brand that can offer resources than you can leverage those queries to build a community of subscribers who are interested in what you have to offer them. That is why it is important to access your strengths and weaknesses, so that you can build upon the things you know about.

Think about how you want to grow your brand. It could take months to come up with a strategy that will work best for your business. Start by reading books from other successful mentors to help you with the motivation needed to keep going.

One of the things that I learned when first starting on the web is that there are lots of information.

It is possible to easily get distracted with all the various types of websites, videos, advertising etc. You may have noticed a huge emphasis on teaching, coaching and learning tutorials from professional business organizations. Everyone wants to sell online courses and teach virtual classes.

It is possible to download e-books on any subject that you desire, unfortunately it can get costly and how much information or training does one actually need? I have been down that road where I have bought programs, and training material on a variety of subjects. Each time the things I was being taught overlapped or often repeated itself, in the end it was no closer to reaching a complete understanding of the subject. This could be because there was too many things to learn.

Companies are interested in data and they will collect it from all kinds of websites. Data mining is used to learn how to best advertise to the consumer. Find out what questions your prospects are asking, then provide the answers with solutions.

But the reality is that no one has the time or the motivation to read or study all those books or reports. Your computer will be full of documents, pdfs and files that you will forget to print or download. Even instructional videos can be time consuming, I have spent plenty of days, weeks and months watching videos and listening to audios and the only advice I can give someone who is new to the internet is that it is best to have a goal in mind.

Decide what it is that you want and then write down a strategy to complete it. For instance if you want to learn a new skill make sure to pick one or two but not more. I have made the mistake of trying to do multiple subjects at the same time and it can become an overload of information. The good news is that once you learn the foundation then it is easier to build upon that knowledge.

Taking small sections and reading piece by piece will help with avoiding getting overload. It is fun to see all the new trends, business ideas, and various topics but at the end of the day, what is it that you really want to accomplish?

Do you have a time frame of completion? is it for work, or just a hobby. Once you get clear on your intentions, it will be easier to navigate through the tremendous amount of information online.

It really does take years to figure out some of the most simplest tasks, especially when it comes to business. Ironically those who join business opportunities are not business owners but freelancers to the company. Following trends can be short-lived but establishing a long-term business plan is recommended. I like watching movies, going on youtube, reading news headlines and curating stories found on the web, but the time spent goes by really fast and before I know it the day is done. Each day is a new opportunity to reach a solution, a goal or accomplish something that makes you happy.

I think people need to make the decision on what they want to learn before others come and tell them all this information, training and tools. Because without a clear path or idea going forward it is easy to get overwhelmed and distracted without the desired result.

Creative people have a harder time picking just one thing to study or do. Everything generated inspiration causing creative people to go about things in many directions. Staying on a focused path will lead to greater success in the end.

How do you find your goal, or to do list when faced with lots of information on the web? I just learned that technology changes our brain and how we think or remember the things around us. Since that is the case it is easy to get distracted. It is important gave a to do list to follow that will get daily tasks structured for repetitive knowledge.

For instance if you are trying to start a new career or start a business online you will want to write down the pros and cons of each endeavor.
